Son of a career Army officer, Frank S. Besson, Jr. was born in Detroit, Mich. in 1910. After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy in 1932, he was commissioned in the Army Corps of Engineers. During his military career he served as Chief of the Allied Military Rail Service in Iran during World War II; as overseer of the Japanese railway system after World War II; and as the first commander of the U.S. Army Materiel Command. Harold Keith Johnson (1912-1983) was an Army officer and Army Chief of Staff during the Johnson administration. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1933, served in World War II and the Korean War, and rose to the rank of general. He served as Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army from July 3, 1964 to July 2, 1968, and supervised the Army during the major expansion and deployments of the Vietnam War.
